The concept of government is under attack. In the United States, Donald Trump has fired tens of thousands of federal workers; ignored congressional statutes; insulted judges; and allowed Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, access to sensitive government information in a slash-and-burn campaign against the US government.

In June 2025 Michael Lewis, the renowned author of bestselling non-fiction masterpieces including Moneyball, The Big Short, Flash Boys and Liar’s Poker, came to the Intelligence Squared stage to tell the inside story of how the Trump administration is dismantling the government and how potentially disastrous the consequences for us all might be.

Drawing from his new collection of essays Who is Government? The Untold Story of Public Service, Lewis argued that we must remember the often overlooked ways government officials do work that is deeply consequential to our lives. He shared impactful stories of public service, such as the story of a coal miner devoted to making mine roofs less likely to collapse and an Internal Revenue Service agent fighting tax evasion like a character straight out of a crime thriller.

In the depths of the pandemic of summer 2020 Nick Cave began a series of long conversations with his old friend Seán O’Hagan. The 40 hours of recordings have been distilled into a remarkable bestselling book, Faith, Hope and Carnage. In it Cave, one of the world’s most acclaimed and visionary musicians, talks with radical candour about his past, his loves, his work ethic, his creativity and the agony of losing his 15-year-old son Arthur in 2015. France, Italy, Spain, Germany: these are the ancient Old World wine-growing regions of Europe, where continuity and history reign supreme. California, Australia, South Africa and Chile: these are some of the New World areas, where technology and science trump tradition. Old World wines tend to be light-bodied, with herbal, mineral and floral components. New World wines, thanks to warmer climates, are generally full-bodied, fruity and higher in alcohol. But which wines are the greater? To battle it out, Intelligence Squared brought together two of the UK’s most celebrated wine experts for this major debate.

Fighting for the tradition and terroir of the Old World was Jancis Robinson, wine correspondent of the Financial Times and the first person outside the wine trade to qualify as a Master of Wine.

Fighting for the modernising spirit of the New World was Oz Clarke, the last winner of the World Wine Tasting Championship, and the youngest ever British Wine Taster of the Year.

When it comes to the Old World, Robinson argued, you can’t beat thousands of years of experience. Europe’s winemakers have been perfecting their craft for countless generations. ‘Their terroirs are in the perfect climatological zones and are generally unaffected by the worst effects of climate change,’ she says. ‘And the best of them just taste, and mature, so much better than the best New World wines.’ As she pointed out, you can’t just suddenly throw up your trellises on a distant continent and expect the Old World’s centuries of refinement to spring from your casks. New World wines are over-ripe, fruit-forward, palate-pleasing young pretenders made on an industrial scale.

But isn’t our reverence for Old World wine sheer nostalgia? That’s what Oz Clarke argued. It’s been over 40 years, he reminded us, since the New World’s superiority over France was definitively put to rest. At the ‘Judgment of Paris’ in 1976, British wine expert Steven Spurrier staged a blind wine tasting for France’s greatest wine critics. New World wines won in every category. Proof, Clarke demonstrated, that New World wines possess a vitality that hidebound Old World wines don’t dare open themselves to.

So which world should prevail? The balanced elegance of the Old World? Or the bold verve and experimentalism of the New World?Show More

Jonathan Haidt on the Rise of The Anxious Generation (Part 2)

Bestselling author and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt has dedicated his career to speaking truth and wisdom in some of the most challenging spaces – communities polarised by politics and religion and university campuses mired in culture wars. Now he turns his attention to what he sees as a perfect storm of factors that are causing a collapse in mental health among teenagers today. According to the American College Health Association, since 2010 anxiety among American college students has increased by 134%, depression by 106%, bipolar disorder by 57%, and anorexia by 100%.

In April 2024 Haidt came to the Intelligence Squared stage where in conversation with BBC presenter Sarah Montague he drew on his new book The Anxious Generation, which has shot to No 1 in the Sunday Times bestsellers. He argued that the decline of free play in childhood and the rise of smartphone use among adolescents are the twin sources of increased mental distress among teenagers. He showed how, between 2010 and 2015, as teens traded in their flip phones for smartphones packed with social media apps, time online soared. This profound shift took place against a backdrop of diminishing childhood freedom, as parents over-supervised every aspect of their children’s lives offline, depriving them of the face-to-face experiences with their peers which they need to become strong and self-governing adults. In short, childhood got rewired.

Haidt argued that it isn’t too late to put the genie back in the bottle. Against the backdrop of the growing movement to ban smartphones in schools, he drew on traditional wisdom and cutting-edge research to offer practical advice to parents, teachers and teenagers.

The October 7 Hamas led terror attacks on Israel and the subsequent siege of Gaza by the IDF has upended the modern Middle East. There are serious questions now as to whether the conflict can be contained or if further escalation with Hezbollah and Iran could engulf the Middle East in a regional war.

In this event featuring Jeremy Bowen, the International Editor of the BBC, who has been covering the Middle East since 1989, our panel reflected on and made sense of what is happening. Bowen has reported on all the most significant events that have shaped the region’s recent history – the long and ultimately failed Middle East peace process, the tragic events of 9/11, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the rise of Mohammed bin Salman and most recently the Israel Gaza war. His deep understanding of the political, cultural and religious differences of its peoples makes him uniquely placed to explain its complex past and troubled present.

Jeremy was unable to appear in-person as he needed to remain in the Middle East to report on unfolding events, but he recorded a 40-minute interview with Matt McAllester, CEO of Intelligence Squared and former Middle East correspondent. He was joined on stage by Sanam Vakil (Director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Chatham House) and James Barr (Historian, author and visiting fellow at King's College London). The event was chaired by BBC Jonny Dymond (Former BBC Middle East correspondent and host of 'The Conflict' the BBC's Middle East podcast).

In the video, Bowen sought to explain the historical context and political motivations behind today's conflicts. He drew from his book 'The Making of the Modern Middle East' and discussed his experiences reporting from countries as diverse as Netanyahu's Israel, Sadam Hussein's Iraq and Erdoğan's Türkiye, recounting his meetings with ordinary people on the frontlines as well as their politicians and leaders.

Is free speech under threat? Many liberals believe that in recent years we have seen an erosion of the right to air unpopular opinions without the risk of being cancelled. We are in an ever-intensifying shutting down of conversation, they maintain, with constituencies on both the left and the right demanding that opinions they don’t like be declared out of bounds, socially, morally or legally. Today this dangerous trend is escalating with the help of populism and social media. We must reverse course now if we want to protect our most precious freedoms.

But some argue otherwise: that the so-called free speech crisis is completely a fiction. What we’re really seeing is a rebalance of power in elite institutions where privileged groups are being held to account for their words by others who have been historically excluded and marginalised. This is nothing more than the righting of wrongs, this side of the argument maintains. Besides, the very notion of freedom of speech is flawed – because the powerful have always enjoyed those freedoms more than the powerless, and so equating so-called cancel culture and no-platforming with state censorship is to fundamentally misunderstand (or wilfully misconstrue) what the concept of free speech was originally designed to protect.

Who’s right and who’s wrong? In October 2024, we launched the first instalment of Intelligence Squared’s new book series THINK AGAIN, published in partnership with The Bodley Head. Our authors – CEO of PEN America Suzanne Nossel and historian Charlotte Lydia Riley – debated the state of free speech today live on stage.

Henry V reigned over England for nine years and four months before he died at the early age of 35. He was known as a hardened, sometimes brutal, warrior, yet one who was also intelligent and artistic. He was a leader who made many mistakes, who misjudged his friends and family members, yet always seemed to triumph when it mattered. As king, he saved a shattered country from economic ruin, put down rebellions and secured England’s borders; in foreign diplomacy he made England a serious player on the world stage once more. Yet through his conquests in northern France, he sowed the seeds for three generations of calamity at home, in the form of the Wars of the Roses.

In September 2024 historian Dan Jones came to Intelligence Squared to tell the epic story of this controversial historical figure. Drawing from his new book Henry V: The Astonishing Rise of England’s Greatest Warrior King, Jones explained why Henry is such an important figure in English history and why his legacy still inspires cultural and political leaders today. William Shakespeare deployed Henry V as a study in youthful naivety redirected as sober statesmanship. In the dark days of World War II, Henry’s victories in France were presented by British filmmakers as examples for a people existentially threatened by Nazism. Churchill called Henry ‘a gleam of splendor in the dark, troubled story of medieval England’, while for one modern medievalist, Henry was, quite simply, ‘the greatest man who ever ruled England’.

In the 20th century most autocrats were brutal dictators whose main goal was to control a domestic population. But in the 21st century autocracy has become much more sophisticated and ambitious in its scope. States like Russia have developed sophisticated cross-border networks of kleptocratic financial structures, innovative security services and professional propagandists. The members of these networks are connected not only within a given country, but among many countries. The corrupt, state-controlled companies in one dictatorship aim to do business with corrupt, state-controlled companies in another. The police in one country can arm, equip, and train the police in another. Propagandists from one country can promote and finance extremists and propaganda in another — pounding home the same messages about the weakness of democracy and the evil of the West.

In September 2024 Anne Applebaum came to Intelligence Squared to provide a radical new framework for understanding autocracy in the 21st century. Applebaum argued that autocracies today are best viewed like an agglomeration of companies or what she calls Autocracy, Inc. Their relations are not based on values, but are rather transactional, which is why they operate so easily across ideological, geographical, and cultural lines. In truth, they are in full agreement about only one thing: The destruction of democratic challengers.

Applebaum was in conversation with BBC broadcaster Jonny Dymond to discuss how to understand and thwart this new evolved form of autocracy.
