Wetlands are crucial to both nature and the communities that depend on them. The World Bank's WACA Program, with support from PROBLUE, is supporting the Government of Ghana in the protection and restoration of the Muni Lagoon's natural habitat. This area, which is significant for community livelihoods and cultural heritage, faces threats from coastal erosion, mangrove cutting, encroachment, and pollution. With support from PROBLUE, the World Bank is supporting those who manage the Muni-Pomadze Ramsar Site with planning, land titling, and ecosystem restoration efforts to secure this vital wetland. These actions aim to protect its biodiversity and the communities that rely on it. Protéger la biodiversité dans les zones humides du Ghana : planification, titres fonciers et restauration des écosystèmes. Les zones humides remplissent des fonctions essentielles à la fois pour la nature et pour les populations locales qui en dépendent. Le programme WACA de la Banque mondiale, avec le soutien du fonds PROBLUE, aide le gouvernement ghanéen à protéger et restaurer l’habitat naturel de la lagune de Muni. Ce site, qui revêt une importance considérable sur le plan des moyens de subsistance et du patrimoine culturel, est menacé par l’érosion côtière, la coupe de la mangrove, le défrichement et la pollution. Avec le concours du fonds PROBLUE, la Banque mondiale aide les responsables de la gestion du site Ramsar de Muni-Pomadze à préserver cette zone humide vitale en menant des efforts de planification, de délivrance de titres fonciers et de restauration des écosystèmes. São Tomé and Príncipe is a small island country located in the Gulf of Guinea. It is covered by tropical forests, coral reefs, and impressive beaches. Extreme phenomena related to climate change, such as strong sea disturbances, coastal erosion, land collapses, and increasingly frequent river, rainfall, and coastal floods, pose a growing threat to communities, public and private infrastructure, and the country's economy. To address these challenges, the World Bank is working with the Government of São Tomé and Príncipe to implement the West Africa Coastal Areas Coastal Adaptation Program, with the aim to enhance the resilience of coastal communities by addressing key socio-economic and environmental factors. These factors contribute to the vulnerability of populations, ecosystems, and coastal assets, making them susceptible to the adverse impacts of climate-related and man-made pressures.
